In late May 2025, Dr Samantha Pearman-Kanza presented on data stewardship and CaSDaR at Future Labs Live Basel, and chaired a lively panel discussion on ‘why should scientific publishers & the lab community care about FAIR data?’
This 2-day in-person conference has a strong focus on lab excellence, technology, and innovation, this event explores every aspect of modern laboratory management – from facilities and sustainability, through to operations and digital transformation.
This event is the European Edition of the Future Labs Live family, and was organised by Terrapin. With a focus on lab excellence, technology, and innovation, this event explores every aspect of modern laboratory management. This event has several data-centric streams including digital transformation, and data management, standards and analytics, and arguably every conference stream has data at their core. As such its vital that we promote data stewardship across a range of disciplines and across industry and academia, as CaSDaRs grand vision involves data stewards embedded in ALL institutions.
In her presentation, Samantha championed the need for Data Stewards across the whole research data lifecycle, noting that unless we invest the time and resources in the people who have the skills to steward our data, that we are not going to progress in our journey towards FAIRer well managed data. The presentation also introduced the now active CaSDaR (The Careers and Skills for Data-driven Research Network+), detailing our roadmap, deliverables, projects partners and team, and our overarching plans for the next four years.
