Tools for Data FAIRification – overcoming barriers in data discoverability and reuse

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by barriers to making data FAIR, but when you realise that others have had the same problems AND have solutions, life feels much better! Holly Ranger and the N8 CIR group have organised an online seminar titled “Tools for Data FAIRification – overcoming barriers in data discoverability and reuse” will take place on Tuesday, 23 June from 13:00–15:00 (BST) with a focus on practical tools and approaches to improve how research data is managed, shared, and reused in line with FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). Four separate speakers will share their stories and present the solutions they have found to improve their practices.

ORCID for Researchers webinar

The UK ORCID consortium is running a webinar to promote ORCID more widely across the UK. It is open to all, so you do not need to be a member of the consortium to attend. Find out why getting a free ORCID iD and populating your ORCID record is key for researchers to get credit for their work. ORCID is a free, unique, persistent identifier (PID) for individuals to use as they engage in research, scholarship, and innovation activities. Obtaining an ORCID iD and populating your profile helps achieve the vision where all who participate in research, scholarship, and innovation are uniquely identified and connected to their contributions across disciplines, borders, and time.

ELIXIR-UK FAIR Contentathon #3

The ELIXIR-UK RDM Club has been awarded a BioFAIR Pathfinder grant for a project called The FAIR-in-action Bridge. In summary, many UK research-performing organisations have FAIR data policies.  Many have guidance documents. What’s often missing is the middle layer: the practical, ready-to-use materials that let RDM professionals in the life sciences turn that guidance into something researchers actually engage with. The FAIR-in-action Bridge is a BioFAIR Pathfinder project, led by coordinators of the ELIXIR-UK RDM Club, that sets out to fill this gap. The project will produce two FAIR-in-action playbooks for life science RDM professionals. We're running three online Contentathons, and we'd love you to join the ones that fit. This first Contentathon is a scoping session. Drop-in. Help us define what each playbook needs to contain and what FAIR resources you use already in the life sciences.

CaSDaR Data Stewardship Training #4 – Mastering Metadata

Join us for the fourth session in the CaSDaR Data Stewardship Training series, in response to the growing need for practical metadata stewardship skills across the research landscape. Designed for Data Stewards and professionals supporting research data management, the session introduces approaches to efficiently clean, standardise, enrich, and transform metadata using tools such as OpenRefine. Participants will explore how metadata practices support FAIR principles, data sharing, repository ingest, and cross-disciplinary reuse. Through practical exercises and collaborative discussion, attendees will gain experience addressing real-world metadata challenges commonly encountered in research environments. This training will be run by the Digital Preservation Southampton.

DPC: iPRES 2026 Great Digital Preservation Bake Off

Calling all technical whisk-takers; the iPRES 2026 Ad Hoc Programme is now open! There are several categories available in the AdHoc programme, including The Great Digital Preservation Bake Off, which returns to iPRES 2026 (September 21-25 in Copenhagen). Whether you're a seasoned baker or a first-timer, we want to see your tools in action. This year, we are recruiting for two tracks: the Signature Home Bake and the Showstopper Pro Bake. Participants will demonstrate how their tools address real-world challenges in digital preservation. Both seasoned and emerging tool developers have the opportunity to serve up and demonstrate the value and effectiveness of their digital preservation tools in a short, timed presentation. Please note that there is no actual baking at the Bake Off.

This hybrid conference organised by Careers and Skills for Data-driven Research (CaSDaR) brings together the growing data stewardship community to share progress, showcase impact, and shape the next phase of activity. This event is fully hybrid, so all sessions will be available online and in-person at The Midland Hotel, Manchester. Day one will focus on data stewardship in practice whereas Day two will highlight CaSDaR's activities to date and allow delegates to have an impact in CaSDaR’s future plans and deliverables through engaging in parallel breakout sessions. There will of course also be the opportunity to meet Cassie and grab some of her swag!

The 21st edition of the International Digital Curation Conference(IDCC27) will take place in Lisbon, Portugal from 9 - 12 February 2027. The main theme of the conference is ”FAIR DO's: Centring People in the Stewardship and Curation of Digital Objects.” The FAIR principles emphasise machine actionability, but the increasing integration of artificial intelligence systems into data infrastructure carries the risk of marginalising people in the planning, management, and practice of digital curation. The theme of this year’s conference acknowledges the crucial role of people in making digital objects FAIR.
