The UK electronic information Group (UKeiG) is pleased to announce its popular half-day online CPD course ‘Research Data Management for information professionals – from researcher need to effective service’ – between 1 pm and 4 pm on Wednesday 11th March 2026

Overview

To fulfill the role of supporting Research Data Management (RDM) librarians need to build an understanding of the policy context in which managing data has become important and gain a good grasp of researchers’ activities, motives, perceptions and feelings around their research and their data. This online course explains the need for research data services, how to find out about users and their needs and then how to apply this knowledge to create a portfolio of research data services that they will want to use.

Who should attend?

Information professionals and librarians with an interest in or responsibility for supporting research, especially RDM, or any professional wishing to keep their skills up to date in this important field.

Topics covered include:

  • What is research data and why can it be hard to manage?
  • When and why did RDM become important from a policy perspective?
  • What is challenging about managing data?
  • What is data management planning?
  • How do you gather user requirements for research data services?
  • What should be in a research data policy?
  • What research data services might be needed and who should deliver them?
  • What should your training programme look like?
  • What skills, knowledge and attitudes are needed to work in supporting RDM?

Course leader

Andrew Cox is a senior lecturer at the School of Information, Journalism and Communication, University of Sheffield and led the RDMRose Project.  He was author of the book Exploring Research Data Management (2018).
