SUMMARY:CaSDaR Data Stewardship Training #5 - Data Selection and Preservation
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for the fifth session in the CaSDaR Data Stewardship Training series\, where we turn our attention to two deeply interconnected pillars of responsible data stewardship: data selection and long-term preservation. \nIn an era of ever-growing data volumes\, knowing what to keep\, how to keep it\, and for how long is one of the most consequential decisions a data steward can make. Poor selection and preservation practices put research outputs at risk of being lost\, inaccessible\, or unusable over time — undermining both the scientific record and the investment made in collecting the data in the first place. \nThis session will equip you with the frameworks\, tools\, and practical judgment needed to make sound decisions about data selection and to implement robust preservation strategies that stand the test of time. \nThis training session will be run by Digital Curation Centre (DCC). \nWhat You’ll Learn\nBy the end of this session\, you will be able to: \n\nApply structured criteria for selecting which data and research objects should be retained\, archived\, or disposed of\nUnderstand the key principles and standards underpinning long-term digital preservation\nAssess the risks to data longevity and put mitigation strategies in place

SUMMARY:UKRN: Open Research: moving from individual recommendations to coordinated action – part 1
DESCRIPTION:This is the first of a six-part online programme\, bringing together funders\, publishers\, infrastructure providers\, researchers\, and research professionals to drive coordinated cross-sector action and make open research a reality in the UK. \nSee the full programme here: Open Research Webinars 2026-27 \nThis session explores research data planning and review\, focusing on the upstream practices that shape how research data and materials are managed\, shared\, and reused across the research lifecycle. Using the recent Sustainable and TrAnsparent Research data (STAR) Study Report as a starting point\, this session will bring together perspectives from across the sector to reflect on the report’s recommendations\, paying particular attention to its concluding recommendation on the need for formalised open research review mechanisms. \nParticipants and attendees will be invited to consider the barriers to and enablers of the practical adoption and implementation of the report’s recommendations\, and identify where coordinated action has the greatest potential to make open research the norm rather than the exception. The session will also look ahead to the rest of the programme\, connecting planning and review with themes including FAIR data and repositories\, open research monitoring and indicators\, skills and capability development\, and incentives and recognition\, setting the agenda for the collaborative work to follow. \nHosted by University of Sheffield. \nThere will be subsequent webinars in November\, December\, January\, February and March\, so watch this space!

SUMMARY:CaSDaR's Data Steward Stories: Stewarding data as a team
DESCRIPTION:The Research Data team at the University of Southampton describe how their roles complement each other \n\n\n\nEffective research data stewardship is essential for any research-performing organisation\, yet expecting a single individual to carry responsibility for every aspect of data stewardship is neither realistic nor sustainable. Successful data stewardship depends on collaboration\, bringing together a range of expertise\, perspectives\, and skills. In this 75-minute edition of the Data Steward Stories webinar series\, we will shine a spotlight on a team who supports research data stewardship within a large institution through collaborative working. \nThe Research Data Management team at the Hartley Library\, University of Southampton\, supports researchers throughout the data lifecycle\, from planning data collection and enabling data reuse to advising on storage\, curation\, and long-term preservation. The team also delivers training and helps shape institutional policy. Each member brings a distinct set of responsibilities and expertise from varied disciplinary and professional backgrounds\, creating a high-quality service for students and staff. \nThe team\, covering roles from Head of Research Data Management and IP\, to Research Librarian\, to Principal Library Assistant\, will describe how their activities compliment each other to support the researchers at the university. \nMore about our speakers: \n\nIsobel Stark is Head of Research Data & Intellectual Property at the University of Southampton Library\, where she leads services supporting research data management\, copyright\, intellectual property\, theses\, and wider researcher engagement activities. She has worked in academic libraries throughout her career\, with previous roles at Manchester Metropolitan University\, The Open University\, the University of Bath\, and UKOLN. At Southampton since 2005\, she has played a key role in developing research data support and open research practices. Isobel is also a co-investigator on the Careers and Skills for Data-driven Research (CaSDaR) Network+\, helping to advance the recognition and professional development of data stewards across the UK.\nLorrayne Smith has worked in information management throughout her career. She started as a Media Librarian at The Guardian and ITN\, where she catalogued and archived news footage and print materials. She later joined the University of Southampton to work on digital asset management for MOOCs before moving into the Library’s cataloguing team. Now an Engagement Librarian specialising in research data and bibliometrics\, she enjoys helping researchers understand their responsibilities and ensuring their research outputs and data are discoverable\, accessible\, and effectively described for future use. She is particularly interested in improving discoverability and supporting good research practice.\nDr Anna Korzeniowska is an Engagement Librarian at the University of Southampton\, where she works as part of Research Data and Open Research & Publication Practice teams. Anna’s route into working with data has not been linear. Her past jobs include\, amongst others\, teaching\, dog training\, pet behaviour counselling\, and project management. Anna holds a PhD in Comparative Psychology from the University of Sussex\, where she studied multimodal perception in domestic dogs. Since obtaining her PhD\, Anna has worked as Open Research coordinator at the University of Surrey\, Research Culture Project Manager at the University of Southampton and Research Culture Manager at eLife\, a life sciences journal. She also volunteers as project coordinator and committee member for open science and data management for ManyDogs\, a multi lab collaboration researching domestic dog behaviour and cognition.\nJoseph Hand has a background in Zoology and is a Principal Library Assistant within the Research Data & Intellectual Property team at the University of Southampton Library. SUMMARY:CaSDaR's Hybrid Data Steward Conference 2026
DESCRIPTION:Registration\nSIGN UP HERE \nOverview\nThis hybrid conference organised by Careers and Skills for Data-driven Research (CaSDaR) brings together the growing data stewardship community to share progress\, showcase impact\, and shape the next phase of activity. This event is fully hybrid\, so all sessions will be available online and in-person at The Midland Hotel\, Manchester \nAs the volume and complexity of research data continues to increase\, the need for skilled Data Stewards remains critical. Over the past year\, CaSDaR has been working to strengthen recognition of the role\, support professional development\, and build a connected UK-wide community. This residential conference provides an opportunity to reflect on progress and contribute to what comes next. \nDay one will focus on data stewardship in practice whereas Day two will highlight CaSDaR’s activities to date and allow delegates to have an impact in CaSDaR’s future plans and deliverables through engaging in parallel breakout sessions. There will of course also be the opportunity to meet Cassie and grab some of her swag! \nWho should attend and why?\nThis conference is suitable for people who are interested in Data Stewardship\, practitioners such as librarians\, archivists\, technicians\, researchers who are interested in moving into the role\, and decision makers who are interested in how they can support the development of Data Stewardship at their organisation. Attendance at CaSDaR’s conference will promote: \n\n\n\n\n\n\nNetworking – this is crucial in Data Stewardship roles where often the responsibilities are dispersed across roles or concentrated in one individual without a clear remit;\nKnowledge exchange – day one of the conference is highlighting disciplinary and organisational expamples of best practice in Data Stewardship; attendance will allow individuals to discuss these examples in more detail and make connections to support personal and organisational development;\nShare the results of any work – we are accepting applications to present your work as either a lightning talk or a poster;\nUnderstanding the funding landscape – in November 2025\, CaSDAR released its first round of funding. Throughout this conference\, we will share information about this process as well as invite talks from successful applicants in preparation for the release of the second round of CaSDaR’s funding; and\nInforming the future directions of CaSDaR – day two of the conference will involve five parallel hybrid breakout session to inform the future direction of CaSDaR in the areas of its key deliverables. Engaging in these will allow individuals to influence the outcomes of these sessions and shape the future of CaSDaR.\n\nLightning talks and poster presentations\nWe are keen to showcase the ongoing work of people involved in Data Stewardship so we would like to encourage people to apply to give a lightning talk or a poster on day one of the conference (17th November 2026). Fill in this form to apply to present a lightning talk and fill in this form to apply to present a poster. SUMMARY:DisCouRSE Focus Group: The dRTP-PRISM Interface
DESCRIPTION:As research becomes more digital\, how are PRISMs and dRTPs learning to work together? Whether it’s AI\, large-scale data analysis\, research software\, digital collections\, advanced computing\, or new forms of digital methodology\, more projects than ever are drawing on the expertise of Digital Research Technical Professionals (dRTPs) and depend on close collaboration between those dRTPs and Professional Research Investment and Strategy Managers (PRISMs). \nAs these collaborations become more common\, many PRISMs and dRTPs are finding themselves navigating new ways of working together\, which bring challenges alongside exciting opportunities for research. E.g.: How early should technical teams be involved in a project? What’s the best way to scope work and manage expectations? How can projects plan realistically for costs\, timelines\, and technical input? And\, perhaps most fundamentally\, how do you even find the right person to talk to when every institution structures its digital research teams differently? \nThis focus group\, run as a satellite event to the 2026 PRISM Network Conference\, is an opportunity for PRISMs and dRTPs to come together and explore these questions openly. Through short talks\, discussion sessions\, and collaborative activities\, participants at every level of experience will share what’s worked\, what hasn’t\, including pain points and frictions that can arise when different priorities\, systems\, and working practices meet. \nA key aim of the day is to turn the collective experience of the group into a short\, practical guidance document for the PRISM community. This resource will help PRISMs better support digital research collaborations\, and contribute to a clearer\, shared understanding of the needs\, constraints\, and expertise that dRTPs bring to research projects. \nThis focus group is part of the Developing a Community of Leaders in Digital Research (DisCouRSE) project. Insights from the event will contribute to the project’s work to strengthen understanding\, leadership\, and collaboration across the digital research landscape. \nJoin us on the 24th of November to help shape this resource and connect with peers navigating the same challenges. \nTuesday 24 November\, 11am-5pm (doors open 10:30am)\nKing’s College London \nNote that this event is in-person only with no hybrid option. Register now.

SUMMARY:International Digital Curation Conference: IDCC27
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC) is an established annual event with a unique place in the digital curation community\, reaching out to individuals\, organisations and institutions across all disciplines and domains involved in curating data and providing an opportunity to get together with like-minded data practitioners to discuss policy and practice. \nThe 21st edition of the International Digital Curation Conference(IDCC27) will take place in Lisbon\, Portugal from 9 – 12 February 2027. The main theme of the conference is ”FAIR DO’s: Centring People in the Stewardship and Curation of Digital Objects.” The FAIR principles emphasise machine actionability\, but the increasing integration of artificial intelligence systems into data infrastructure carries the risk of marginalising people in the planning\, management\, and practice of digital curation. The theme of this year’s conference acknowledges the crucial role of people in making digital objects FAIR. \nSubmissions are now open for papers\, lightning talks\, posters\, demos and workshops. Full information is available on the conference website! \nWho should attend?\nAll those involved in the curation and stewardship of data and related roles. \nAbout DCC\nThe International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC) is an established annual event with a unique place in the digital curation community\, reaching out to individuals\, organisations and institutions across all disciplines and domains involved in curating data and providing an opportunity to get together with like-minded data practitioners to discuss policy and practice.
