DESCRIPTION:The ELIXIR-UK RDM Club has been awarded a BioFAIR Pathfinder grant for a project called The FAIR-in-action Bridge. \nIn summary\, many UK research-performing organisations have FAIR data policies.  Many have guidance documents. What’s often missing is the middle layer: the practical\, ready-to-use materials that let RDM professionals in the life sciences turn that guidance into something researchers actually engage with. \nThe FAIR-in-action Bridge is a BioFAIR Pathfinder project\, led by coordinators of the ELIXIR-UK RDM Club\, that sets out to fill this gap. \nThe project will produce two FAIR-in-action playbooks for life science RDM professionals: \n\nHow to approach FAIRification: practical activities and templates for FAIRifying data.\nHow to communicate and advocate FAIR: talking points\, FAIR games and advocacy materials for different audiences\n\nBoth will be roughly 80% ready-to-use\, aggregating open FAIR material in the public domain\, with placeholders (20%) for your local context (eg institutional repositories and guidance). Both will be openly licensed and indexed. And both will be tested through one-day in-person rollouts at six UK RPOs. \nWe’re running three online Contentathons\, and we’d love you to join the ones that fit. This first Contentathon is a scoping session. Drop-in. Help us define what each playbook needs to contain and what FAIR resources you use already in the life sciences. \nThere will also be two other Contentathons: \n\n28th May – Contentathon #2 Playbook 1 content creation – How to approach FAIRification. SUMMARY:UKDS: Introduction to effective and practical research data management
DESCRIPTION:Research data management encompasses all stages of handling data created during a research project\, either primary or secondary. It is not only about adhering to principles but also about enhancing the efficiency\, impact\, and integrity of research. \nEffective data management ensures that data are Findable\, Accessible\, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR principles). The foundation of sensible data management lies in understanding and applying best practices across the data lifecycle from planning to sharing\, while adhering to ethical standards and legal requirements. \nDuring this free 90-minute online workshop\, we will explore the key components of effective research data management\, including data management planning\, organising\, and documenting data\, ensuring data quality\, storing and backing up data\, as well as strategies for data preservation and sharing. The workshop will also cover practical tools and techniques for data management\, such as metadata standards for documenting data\, data quality semi-automated freeware\, and best practices for data sharing and archiving. \nThe workshop will conclude with a dedicated Q&A session. \nPresenter: Dr. Hina Zahid. Hina has a PhD in Health Psychology from the University of Essex. She currently works as a Senior Research Data Services Officer at the UK Data Archive\, University of Essex. She provides guidance and training on ethical and legal issues related to data management and data sharing in order to promote good data practices in research and to optimise data sharing opportunities. \nLevel: Introductory \nExperience/knowledge required: Basic understanding of research methods is recommended but not required. \nTarget audience: Academic and non-academic data professionals such as researchers\, academic and professional services staff\, data managers\, data stewards and others keen on advancing their research practices through effective data management. \nThis event will be livestreamed on our UK Data Service YouTube channel but the chat will be disabled. DESCRIPTION:Overview\nIn this session\, Jeanne will describe her journey and how her research experience informed her development as a Data Steward. This session will have a 30 minute presentation from Jeanne\, followed by an opportunity for audience members to ask questions. \nAudience\nThe audience for these will be individuals who are working in roles involving data management planning\, management of research or data processes within organisations\, or researchers who have an interest into moving into the role of Data Steward. \nSpeaker Biography \nJeanne just moved to Vienna\, Austria to join the team of Data Stewards at the University of Vienna\, now focused thematically on Urban Studies. Previously and since 2020\, she was a Data Steward in the Core Facility for Life Science Computing at the Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) in Jena\, Germany. In this role she offers trainings and consultations\, is actively involved in European RDM communities\, and promotes good practices in research data stewardship through sharing her expertise. Prior to this role\, Jeanne worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the FLI\, with a research focus on Computational Bioinformatics. In addition to being embedded as a Data Steward in a research institution\, Jeanne contributes to national and international networks that support the development of Data Stewards\, such as the ELIXIR-RDM Community and Fellowship of the Data\, as well as regularly contributing to outputs supporting others’ development in Research Data Management. Jeanne’s educational background is in Biology; she obtained her MSc in Organismic\, Evolutionary science and Paleo-Biology from the University of Bonn in 2012\, before her PhD at the Zoological Research Museum Koenig in Bonn.

SUMMARY:EOSC EDEN project: Seminar on Digital Preservation
DESCRIPTION:The EOSC EDEN project\, an EU-funded initiative\, is continuing its webinar series to share key results and insights from its work on advancing digital preservation strategies across Europe. At the heart of EOSC EDEN lies the ambition to develop a framework for identifying research data that should be prioritised for long-term digital preservation at both European and national levels. \nIn this fourth seminar\, we will present the findings from the survey run by EOSC EDEN between May and July 2025. The survey investigated current practices in digital preservation\, and the guidance documents that inform these practices. Join the conversation at Edinburgh Open Research Conference 2026 \nFull Programme – https://library.ed.ac.uk/research-support/eorc2026/programme \nThis one day conference provides an opportunity for all individuals interested in making research more open and accessible to come together to discuss their challenges\, success stories\, and next steps. \nThe ambitious “Recommendation on Open Science” produced by UNESCO recognises the broad scope and impact of Open Research – not just on knowledge production\, but also on the world at large. Built around the values of Quality and Integrity\, Collective Benefit\, Equity and Fairness\, and Diversity and Inclusion\, the model provides a foundation for a strategic and principled path forward. Over the past year we have begun revamping our action plan and internal model at the University of Edinburgh to reflect this ambitious and expansive scope. \nOur new action plan is more diverse and expansive than ever before\, and our strategies will build upon this new perspective\, taking into account our local context. To celebrate this positive step forward\, this year’s conference will therefore delve into the various values\, principles\, and actions highlighted by UNESCO’s model. \nJoin the conversation in person in 50 George Square\, University of Edinburgh or Online. DESCRIPTION:It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by barriers to making data FAIR\, but when you realise that others have had the same problems AND have solutions\, life feels much better! \nHolly Ranger and the N8 CIR group have organised an online seminar titled “Tools for Data FAIRification – overcoming barriers in data discoverability and reuse” will take place on Tuesday\, 23 June from 13:00–15:00 (BST) with a focus on practical tools and approaches to improve how research data is managed\, shared\, and reused in line with FAIR principles (Findable\, Accessible\, Interoperable\, Reusable). Four separate speakers will share their stories and present the solutions they have found to improve their practices. \nThe programme includes four talks: \n\nStreamlining Data Management Planning – Kryštof Komanec discusses tools like the Data Stewardship Wizard to improve research data management practices.\nMaximising Data Reusability – Matthew Nichols explores methods and tools that enhance the discoverability and usability of environmental datasets.\nAutomated ReadMe Generation – Ali Abdurhman Kelil and Dag-Even Martinsen Torsøe present URGE\, a tool to help efficiently generate dataset documentation.\nElectronic Notebooks – Zuzanna Zagrodzka highlights how digital notebooks support transparency\, reproducibility\, and FAIR research practices.\n\nOverall\, the seminar showcases practical solutions and expert insights aimed at improving data management workflows and enabling better data sharing and reuse.

SUMMARY:ELIXIR-UK FAIR Contentathon #3
DESCRIPTION:The ELIXIR-UK RDM Club has been awarded a BioFAIR Pathfinder grant for a project called The FAIR-in-action Bridge. \nIn summary\, many UK research-performing organisations have FAIR data policies.  Many have guidance documents. What’s often missing is the middle layer: the practical\, ready-to-use materials that let RDM professionals in the life sciences turn that guidance into something researchers actually engage with. \nThe FAIR-in-action Bridge is a BioFAIR Pathfinder project\, led by coordinators of the ELIXIR-UK RDM Club\, that sets out to fill this gap. \nThe project will produce two FAIR-in-action playbooks for life science RDM professionals: \n\nHow to approach FAIRification: practical activities and templates for FAIRifying data.\nHow to communicate and advocate FAIR: talking points\, FAIR games and advocacy materials for different audiences\n\nBoth will be roughly 80% ready-to-use\, aggregating open FAIR material in the public domain\, with placeholders (20%) for your local context (eg institutional repositories and guidance). Both will be openly licensed and indexed. And both will be tested through one-day in-person rollouts at six UK RPOs. \nWe’re running three online Contentathons\, and we’d love you to join the ones that fit. This third and final Contentathon is a full day event\, on how to communicate and advocate FAIR. Hands-on\, structured in sections so you can join the bits relevant to you.

Yet many research teams and support professionals face ongoing challenges with inconsistent formats\, duplicated values\, incomplete documentation\, and fragmented workflows that limit the impact and reuse potential of valuable datasets. \nThis hands-on workshop responds to the growing need for practical metadata stewardship skills across the research landscape. Designed for Data Stewards and professionals supporting research data management\, the session introduces approaches to efficiently clean\, standardise\, enrich\, and transform metadata using tools such as OpenRefine. \nParticipants will explore how metadata practices support FAIR principles\, data sharing\, repository ingest\, and cross-disciplinary reuse. DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe Fellowship of the Data — International RDM Community Meeting 2026 will take place on September 21 and 22 at the University of Vienna. Two Meetings have taken place in Germany already (2023 and 2025) with each ca. 80 participants from diverse backgrounds. Now\, we continue the series: Let’s get together in Vienna and cultivate our supportive environment dedicated to the advancement of RDM! \nContinuing the spirit of 2025: “The Fellowship of the Data is fueled by enthusiasm for Research Data Management (RDM) and networking. Founded by RDM trainers and data stewards\, we want to offer an open space for everyone with aligned interests that fosters our community bonds and allows us to find peers from many different contexts and scientific disciplines. We believe in the power of collaboration and knowledge sharing. By exchanging resources\, learning from each other’s experiences\, and forging synergistic teams\, we can learn how to better support researchers and stakeholders alike”. \nThe goal of our third RDM Community Meeting is to boost the fellowship of like-minded professionals who assist researchers across various fields in their RDM efforts\, whether through training or other means. SUMMARY:CaSDaR's Hybrid Data Steward Conference 2026
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThis hybrid conference organised by Careers and Skills for Data-driven Research (CaSDaR) brings together the growing data stewardship community to share progress\, showcase impact\, and shape the next phase of activity. This event is fully hybrid\, so all sessions will be available online and in-person at The Midland Hotel\, Manchester \nAs the volume and complexity of research data continues to increase\, the need for skilled Data Stewards remains critical. Over the past year\, CaSDaR has been working to strengthen recognition of the role\, support professional development\, and build a connected UK-wide community. This residential conference provides an opportunity to reflect on progress and contribute to what comes next. \nDay one will focus on data stewardship in practice whereas Day two will highlight CaSDaR’s activities to date and allow delegates to have an impact in CaSDaR’s future plans and deliverables through engaging in parallel breakout sessions. There will of course also be the opportunity to meet Cassie and grab some of her swag! \nWho should attend and why?\nThis conference is suitable for people who are interested in Data Stewardship\, practitioners such as librarians\, archivists\, technicians\, researchers who are interested in moving into the role\, and decision makers who are interested in how they can support the development of Data Stewardship at their organisation. Attendance at CaSDaR’s conference will promote: \n\n\n\n\n\n\nNetworking – this is crucial in Data Stewardship roles where often the responsibilities are dispersed across roles or concentrated in one individual without a clear remit;\nKnowledge exchange – day one of the conference is highlighting disciplinary and organisational expamples of best practice in Data Stewardship; attendance will allow individuals to discuss these examples in more detail and make connections to support personal and organisational development;\nShare the results of any work – we are accepting applications to present your work as either a lightning talk or a poster;\nUnderstanding the funding landscape – in November 2025\, CaSDAR released its first round of funding. Throughout this conference\, we will share information about this process as well as invite talks from successful applicants in preparation for the release of the second round of CaSDaR’s funding; and\nInforming the future directions of CaSDaR – day two of the conference will involve five parallel hybrid breakout session to inform the future direction of CaSDaR in the areas of its key deliverables. DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC) is an established annual event with a unique place in the digital curation community\, reaching out to individuals\, organisations and institutions across all disciplines and domains involved in curating data and providing an opportunity to get together with like-minded data practitioners to discuss policy and practice. \nThe 21st edition of the International Digital Curation Conference(IDCC27) will take place in Lisbon\, Portugal from 9 – 12 February 2027. The main theme of the conference is ”FAIR DO’s: Centring People in the Stewardship and Curation of Digital Objects.” The FAIR principles emphasise machine actionability\, but the increasing integration of artificial intelligence systems into data infrastructure carries the risk of marginalising people in the planning\, management\, and practice of digital curation. The theme of this year’s conference acknowledges the crucial role of people in making digital objects FAIR. \nSubmissions are now open for papers\, lightning talks\, posters\, demos and workshops.
