DESCRIPTION:The ELIXIR-UK RDM Club has been awarded a BioFAIR Pathfinder grant for a project called The FAIR-in-action Bridge. \nIn summary\, many UK research-performing organisations have FAIR data policies.  Many have guidance documents. What’s often missing is the middle layer: the practical\, ready-to-use materials that let RDM professionals in the life sciences turn that guidance into something researchers actually engage with. \nThe FAIR-in-action Bridge is a BioFAIR Pathfinder project\, led by coordinators of the ELIXIR-UK RDM Club\, that sets out to fill this gap. \nThe project will produce two FAIR-in-action playbooks for life science RDM professionals: \n\nHow to approach FAIRification: practical activities and templates for FAIRifying data.\nHow to communicate and advocate FAIR: talking points\, FAIR games and advocacy materials for different audiences\n\nBoth will be roughly 80% ready-to-use\, aggregating open FAIR material in the public domain\, with placeholders (20%) for your local context (eg institutional repositories and guidance). Both will be openly licensed and indexed. And both will be tested through one-day in-person rollouts at six UK RPOs. \nWe’re running three online Contentathons\, and we’d love you to join the ones that fit. This second Contentathon is a full day event\,  on how to approach FAIRification. Hands-on\, structured in sections so you can join the bits relevant to you. \nThere will also be one further Contentathon: \n\n1st July – Contentathon #3 Playbook 2 content creation – How to communicate and advocate FAIR. SUMMARY:EOSC EDEN project: Seminar on Digital Preservation
DESCRIPTION:The EOSC EDEN project\, an EU-funded initiative\, is continuing its webinar series to share key results and insights from its work on advancing digital preservation strategies across Europe. At the heart of EOSC EDEN lies the ambition to develop a framework for identifying research data that should be prioritised for long-term digital preservation at both European and national levels. \nIn this fourth seminar\, we will present the findings from the survey run by EOSC EDEN between May and July 2025. The survey investigated current practices in digital preservation\, and the guidance documents that inform these practices. Survey questions interrogated long-term preservation across different domains and organisation types\, and identified issues that potentially affect how preservation and the findability\, accessibility\, interoperability\, and reusability of digital data objects may change over time. \nA detailed report on the survey and its findings has been published in the EOSC EDEN Zenodo Community. \nIf you are interested in digital preservation and want to learn more about EOSC EDEN’s latest work\, we warmly invite you to join us: \nThis event is aimed at: Digital preservation practitioners\, managers and trainers; digital archivists; data curators; and researchers working on data curation and preservation.

DESCRIPTION:Overview\nIn this session\, Jeanne will describe her journey and how her research experience informed her development as a Data Steward. This session will have a 30 minute presentation from Jeanne\, followed by an opportunity for audience members to ask questions. \nAudience\nThe audience for these will be individuals who are working in roles involving data management planning\, management of research or data processes within organisations\, or researchers who have an interest into moving into the role of Data Steward. \nSpeaker Biography \nJeanne just moved to Vienna\, Austria to join the team of Data Stewards at the University of Vienna\, now focused thematically on Urban Studies. Previously and since 2020\, she was a Data Steward in the Core Facility for Life Science Computing at the Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) in Jena\, Germany. In this role she offers trainings and consultations\, is actively involved in European RDM communities\, and promotes good practices in research data stewardship through sharing her expertise. Prior to this role\, Jeanne worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the FLI\, with a research focus on Computational Bioinformatics. In addition to being embedded as a Data Steward in a research institution\, Jeanne contributes to national and international networks that support the development of Data Stewards\, such as the ELIXIR-RDM Community and Fellowship of the Data\, as well as regularly contributing to outputs supporting others’ development in Research Data Management. Jeanne’s educational background is in Biology; she obtained her MSc in Organismic\, Evolutionary science and Paleo-Biology from the University of Bonn in 2012\, before her PhD at the Zoological Research Museum Koenig in Bonn.

SUMMARY:UKDS: Introduction to effective and practical research data management
DESCRIPTION:Research data management encompasses all stages of handling data created during a research project\, either primary or secondary. It is not only about adhering to principles but also about enhancing the efficiency\, impact\, and integrity of research. \nEffective data management ensures that data are Findable\, Accessible\, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR principles). The foundation of sensible data management lies in understanding and applying best practices across the data lifecycle from planning to sharing\, while adhering to ethical standards and legal requirements. \nDuring this free 90-minute online workshop\, we will explore the key components of effective research data management\, including data management planning\, organising\, and documenting data\, ensuring data quality\, storing and backing up data\, as well as strategies for data preservation and sharing. The workshop will also cover practical tools and techniques for data management\, such as metadata standards for documenting data\, data quality semi-automated freeware\, and best practices for data sharing and archiving. \nThe workshop will conclude with a dedicated Q&A session. \nPresenter: Dr. Hina Zahid. Hina has a PhD in Health Psychology from the University of Essex. She currently works as a Senior Research Data Services Officer at the UK Data Archive\, University of Essex. She provides guidance and training on ethical and legal issues related to data management and data sharing in order to promote good data practices in research and to optimise data sharing opportunities. \nLevel: Introductory \nExperience/knowledge required: Basic understanding of research methods is recommended but not required. \nTarget audience: Academic and non-academic data professionals such as researchers\, academic and professional services staff\, data managers\, data stewards and others keen on advancing their research practices through effective data management. \nThis event will be livestreamed on our UK Data Service YouTube channel but the chat will be disabled. DESCRIPTION:The Software Sustainability Institute’s annual Collaborations Workshop (CW) is an immersive\, three-day unconference\, which emphasises active collaborations\, dynamic discussions\, and hands-on problem-solving. The highly anticipated Collaborations Workshop 2026 (CW26) will take place as a hybrid event from Tuesday 28 April to Thursday 30 April at ICC Belfast. The event is set to feature an impressive lineup of speakers and an interactive programme of sessions. The theme is Strengthening The Research Software Community. \nThe programme includes a one-hour mini-workshop titled How should the DIRECT Framework adapt to serve diverse dRTP communities? \n\nThe DIRECT Framework is a tool for individuals and teams of digital research technical professionals to support career progression. The framework is a collection of nearly 200 skills organised by competency and competency domain\, including technical and non-technical capabilities. The web app makes it easy to mark against role profiles and build a visualisation wheel of skills. (Video clip)\n\nThe CW26 mini workshop is a chance for communities such as green compute\, mental health and data stewards to co-define DIRECT’s contribution model and requirements so DIRECT becomes more representative and applicable.  Wednesday 29 April at 15:00 BST\, hybrid format. \n\n\nVersion 2.0 of the framework will be launched that week\, adding a community-contributed set of tools\, methodologies and learning resources to support the acquisitions of the skills. DIRECT is supported by UKRI Network+ and is quickly gaining interest across the UK and beyond. \n\n\nThe CW26 final phase tickets are available for in-person attendance until 8 April. DESCRIPTION:Registration Links\n\nRegister to join in person\nRegister to join online \n\nOverview\nJoin us for one of two participatory research events exploring the future of data stewardship. In collaboration with the Research Data Alliance’s Data Steward Careers Track Working Group\, the University of Sheffield Library and CaSDaR are bringing together people from across the sector to co-create Data Steward personas. Bursaries are available for in-person attendance\, and this event is offered as a hybrid sessions. This event is one of two events run in collaboration with UCL’s Office for Open Science and Scholarship and STEP-UP. \nAs the volume and complexity of research data continue to grow\, so does the essential role of Data Stewards—professionals who ensure that data is shareable\, reusable\, and aligned with FAIR principles. Although many roles\, including librarians\, archivists\, Research Software Engineers (RSEs)\, research managers\, technicians\, and researchers routinely perform data stewardship activities\, the position of “Data Steward” remains under-defined and often under-recognised in many countries.  \nExisting work largely focuses on defining the responsibilities of Data Stewards and the skills and training required to succeed in these roles. However\, there is limited attention on establishing clear\, sustainable career pathways for Data Stewards. The RDA Data Steward Career Tracks Working Group (WG)\, part of the Research Data Alliance\, aims to address this gap by developing a systematic methodology for defining data steward personas and mapping potential career pathways for these roles.  \nThis hands-on workshop introduces the concept of employee personas—semi-fictional profiles that reflect the motivations\, needs\, and challenges of data stewards. Through discussion and collaborative activities\, participants will help shape practical profiles that organisations can use to enhance job design\, professional development\, training pathways\, and HR practices. \nThis event will bring together key stakeholders to contribute to the WG’s work by collaboratively developing Data Steward Personas. This work will deliver two major outcomes: stronger evidence to support the RDA’s methodology for developing Data Steward personas\, and a set of personas that will directly inform the collaborative groups’ work in defining the role\, establishing skills frameworks\, and shaping future career pathways\, and will provide a networking opportunity for attendees. \nThe session will begin with a brief introduction to the Working Group’s objectives\, followed by an interactive workshop. In collaboration with the Research Data Alliance’s Data Steward Careers Track Working Group\, the University of Sheffield Library and CaSDaR are bringing together people from across the sector to co-create Data Steward personas. This event is one of two events run in collaboration with UCL’s Office for Open Science and Scholarship and STEP-UP. This event will be fully online. \nAs the volume and complexity of research data continue to grow\, so does the essential role of Data Stewards—professionals who ensure that data is shareable\, reusable\, and aligned with FAIR principles. Although many roles\, including librarians\, archivists\, Research Software Engineers (RSEs)\, research managers\, technicians\, and researchers routinely perform data stewardship activities\, the position of “Data Steward” remains under-defined and often under-recognised in many countries.  \nExisting work largely focuses on defining the responsibilities of Data Stewards and the skills and training required to succeed in these roles. However\, there is limited attention on establishing clear\, sustainable career pathways for Data Stewards. The RDA Data Steward Career Tracks Working Group (WG)\, part of the Research Data Alliance\, aims to address this gap by developing a systematic methodology for defining data steward personas and mapping potential career pathways for these roles.  \nThis hands-on workshop introduces the concept of employee personas—semi-fictional profiles that reflect the motivations\, needs\, and challenges of data stewards. Through discussion and collaborative activities\, participants will help shape practical profiles that organisations can use to enhance job design\, professional development\, training pathways\, and HR practices. \nThis event will bring together key stakeholders to contribute to the WG’s work by collaboratively developing Data Steward Personas. In this event Jen Gibson from Dryad will present on Credibility\, integrity and intent in research: The role of research data. Jen’s talk will introduce Dryad\, an open data publishing platform and a community committed to the open availability and routine re-use of all research data. Jen will touch upon credibility\, integrity and intent in research and the role that research data play in these.

In this talk\, we present the features of the new storage and the timeline of implementation\, and discuss considerations for our research data management service and open research agenda.

SUMMARY:CaSDaR's Funding Call Round 1: Q&A (2)
DESCRIPTION:We have created an additional Q&A online session to support applicants for CaSDaR’s Funding Call round 1 – come prepared with your queries!\n\n\n\nPart of the remit of CaSDaR is to provide an evidence base showing the value of embedding data stewardship into research workflows; we feel that a sustainable way of doing this is to fund data stewards in research organisations. CaSDaR has flexible funds allocated to enable development of projects\, forming an evidence base to display the relevance of introducing data stewards in the UK across multiple disciplines and organisations. \nWe have developed two types of grants that our community can apply for: \n\n£5k mini project funds – these are intended to be short-term projects to provide experience of Data Stewardship for individuals who would like to learn more about it as a career option; and\n£70 large project funds – these are intended to be longer term projects for individuals who are established in their careers\, and have a project that they are interested in developing to demonstrate the value of their work.\n\nCaSDaR’s Funding Call was launched on the 5th November 2025 with an online webinar. The webinar can be viewed on CaSDaR’s YouTube channel and the slides are also available. \nWe want to ensure that our community feel supported to apply for the funding opportunities\, so we’re inviting anyone who has queries to come to a Q&A session where we can provide some answers.
