SUMMARY:DCC / RDA Europe - Self-assessing Research Data Management and FAIR-enabling Capabilities
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe Digital Curation Centre is pleased to announce a professional development opportunity\, co-hosted with RDA Europe\, designed specifically for professionals in research support roles. Our half-day workshop taking place next month will equip you with the skills and knowledge to assess and improve your organisation’s research data management (RDM) and FAIR-enabling capabilities. \nThis interactive workshop will introduce you to the concept of self-assessment\, providing you with practical guidance on how to evaluate your organisations’ capabilities to support RDM and the production and reuse of FAIR data.  Through hands-on activities and real-world scenario discussions\, you will gain essential skills in conducting these assessments and learn how to implement\, interpret\, and use the results to drive organisational improvements. \nWho should attend?\nThis training is highly beneficial for professionals involved in research support roles\, such as:\n\n\nResearch Data Management Professionals\n\n\nLibrarians\n\n\nData Stewards\n\n\nResearch Administrators\n\n\nResearch Technical Professionals\n\n\nSenior Management\n\n\nRegistration and fees\nTo secure your spot\, please visit our Eventbrite page.  We encourage multiple representatives from each organisation to participate and offer reduced rates for group registration. \n\n\nIndividual participant: £275\n\n\nOrganisation rate for two participants: £425\n\n\nOrganisation rate for three participants: £550\n\n\nSpecial LMIC rate available (details on the registration page)\n\n\nWe look forward to helping your organisation improve its research data management and FAIR data capabilities.

SUMMARY:STEP-UP Training: Tabular Data Collection
DESCRIPTION:This online training on Tabular Data Collection is open to everyone! \nOverview\nIs your data as clean as you think it is? Inconsistent formats\, ambiguous entries\, and poorly documented variables can cause real headaches come analysis time – but many of these problems are avoidable with a bit of planning upfront. \nThis free\, beginner-friendly online training introduces practical approaches to collecting and documenting tabular data well. \nWhether you’re setting up a new dataset or trying to make sense of an existing one\, you’ll come away with tools and habits that will save you time down the line. \nLearning Outcomes\nBy the end of the session\, you’ll be able to: \n\nIdentify common variable types and understand how data is stored and interpreted\nSpot inconsistencies in datasets that could affect your analysis\nApply strategies to prevent messy data at the point of collection\nWrite clear data collection guidelines for yourself and your collaborators\nCreate a data dictionary to document your dataset\n\nExperience Required\nThere is no prior experience needed. Some instructions on how to download the course materials will be sent out closer to the time. \nAdditional Training\nIf you find this training session looks useful\, have you looked at our session on Structuring Research Materials on 1st June? \n\nTraining Details\nThis session was designed as part of the STEP-UP project\, which supports digital research technical professionals through training\, mentoring and career support. However\, we welcome anyone who works with research files to join. \nThis training will be run online via Zoom (link to be emailed to attendees) \n\n\n\nAdd to Calendar \n\n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:STEP-UP Training: Structuring Research Materials: Folder structures\, file naming\, and version control
DESCRIPTION:This online training on Structuring Research Materials is open to everyone! \nOverview\nDo you know where all your files are? Are you confident you’re working on the latest version? If the answer is “probably…” then this session is for you. \nThis free\, beginner-friendly online training will walk you through practical strategies for organising your research materials\, from folder structures and file naming conventions to version control. \nWhether you’re just starting out or looking to build on existing habits\, you’ll leave with clear\, actionable approaches you can put into practice straight away. \nLearning Outcomes\nBy the end of the session\, you’ll be able to: \n\nStructure your research files using a logical\, consistent folder hierarchy\nName files in a way that makes them findable\, orderable\, and unambiguous\nManage versions effectively – and know when tools like Git might help\n\nThis session was designed as part of the STEP-UP project\, which supports digital research technical professionals through training\, mentoring and career support. However\, we welcome anyone who works with research files to join. \nExperience Required\nThere is no prior experience needed. SUMMARY:UKDS: Introduction to effective and practical research data management
DESCRIPTION:Research data management encompasses all stages of handling data created during a research project\, either primary or secondary. It is not only about adhering to principles but also about enhancing the efficiency\, impact\, and integrity of research. \nEffective data management ensures that data are Findable\, Accessible\, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR principles). The foundation of sensible data management lies in understanding and applying best practices across the data lifecycle from planning to sharing\, while adhering to ethical standards and legal requirements. \nDuring this free 90-minute online workshop\, we will explore the key components of effective research data management\, including data management planning\, organising\, and documenting data\, ensuring data quality\, storing and backing up data\, as well as strategies for data preservation and sharing. The workshop will also cover practical tools and techniques for data management\, such as metadata standards for documenting data\, data quality semi-automated freeware\, and best practices for data sharing and archiving. \nThe workshop will conclude with a dedicated Q&A session. \nPresenter: Dr. Hina Zahid. Hina has a PhD in Health Psychology from the University of Essex. She currently works as a Senior Research Data Services Officer at the UK Data Archive\, University of Essex. She provides guidance and training on ethical and legal issues related to data management and data sharing in order to promote good data practices in research and to optimise data sharing opportunities. \nLevel: Introductory \nExperience/knowledge required: Basic understanding of research methods is recommended but not required. \nTarget audience: Academic and non-academic data professionals such as researchers\, academic and professional services staff\, data managers\, data stewards and others keen on advancing their research practices through effective data management. \nThis event will be livestreamed on our UK Data Service YouTube channel but the chat will be disabled. By registering and attending the Zoom event you will be able to ask questions and interact. \nRecordings of UK Data Service events are made available on our YouTube channel and\, together with the slides\, on our past events pages soon after the event has taken place. \nThis event is part of our UK Data Service introductory training series: Spring 2026.
